Sleepwalker

Technique:

ETCHING / Hand-Coloured

Picture size

5³/₆₄ x 4¹/₁₆ in
12.8 x 10.3 cm

Paper size

11¹³/₁₆ x 8¹⁷/₆₄ in
30 x 21 cm

Year

2021

Description

In Sleepwalker, a whimsical figure drifts effortlessly over the rooftops, seemingly lost in a dream. While the character appears to be on the Moon, there’s an ironic twist: the large celestial body behind may not be the moon at all, but the Earth, turning the entire scene into an upside-down dreamlike reality.

The sleepwalker's light, floating steps and the mysterious landscape beneath them add to the surreal atmosphere, as though the figure is navigating a world that blurs the boundaries between reality and dream. The warm colors and fantastical details further evoke a sense of calm wonder, where the usual rules of gravity and space seem to bend.

The humor and irony come from the inversion of expectations—this creature, so at ease in the stars, walks as if it were sleepwalking on Earth, unaware of the unusual world around it. Sleepwalker gently invites the viewer to join in the dream, floating between the familiar and the fantastical.
